Lesson 7 of 8 Starship Design

Now you will create a 3D environment to show your starship in context. In this lesson, you will sketch out new keyframes, then model the scene and add materials.

  • Rough Keyframe Planning Homework

Plan out the keyframe(s) you want to create during these final two lessons. Do this by creating a very simple 3D blockout, finding your camera angles and object placement, then doing a quick paintover and noting down what’s needed.

Keep in mind that Gabriel chose to demonstrate by creating a very complex custom structure for his scene, but you can build something more contained, or use kitbash elements if you prefer. The draw of your scene should ultimately be the starship, and not the environment around it, so you don’t need to focus as much on the creation of these new assets.

  • Initial Keyframe Homework

Create the initial 3D model of whatever your scene will require, create the UVs, and add some basic materials. Then do a quick 2D paintover check-in to see where to go next with the scene.

  • Detail & Render Homework

Add in any further details and materials needed for your 3D scene, then render out one of your keyframes. It’s recommended that you work on your planned shots one-by-one from this point forward, so you can be more flexible with any necessary future changes.
