Asteroids
Lesson 9 of 11 Planets & Stars
In this lesson you’ll learn to create asteroids in both 2D and 3D, as well as large-scale asteroid fields.
Basic Asteroids Homework
Try creating basic asteroids using both the 2D method and the 3D method Gabriel showed in this chapter.
Don’t worry, neither has to look perfect at this stage. We will explore more advanced techniques later in the lesson.
Asteroid Clusters Homework
Create your first asteroid cluster, using one of the techniques Gabriel demonstrated in this chapter. You can use the basic 3D asteroids created during the previous homework to populate the cluster.
Don’t worry about lighting or materials at this stage. You should focus purely on the scattering of your asteroid cluster.
Asteroid Material Homework
Sculpt a ‘hero’ asteroid, bring that along with your other asteroids into Octane (or the software of your choice), and set up materials. Keep in mind that you may want a bespoke material for your sculpted asteroid, separate from the rest of your asteroids.
Single Asteroid Paintover
Do a paintover for your single asteroid render, bringing the artwork to its finished state. Gabriel didn’t choose to do much paintover work on his own single asteroid image, but everyone’s renders will be different. You should do as much 2D work as you think is needed for your own artwork.
Asteroid Cluster Scene Homework
Create a final paintover of your asteroid cluster. You can use the asteroid cluster you created earlier in this lesson to get a head start on this homework, or you can create an entirely new one like Gabriel did during the chapter. Try placing a few asteroids by hand to help the composition. Finally, bring your renders into Photoshop and create your finished piece of artwork.
