Portrait Painting

Lesson 4 of 4 Painting Portraits

Now you will take the image you created in the previous lesson and add color. You'll start small by applying a simple wash to inspire the color palette. Then you'll add custom-painted sections one by one, taking your time to ensure the highest quality standard. Once you have all the final details in place, Daniel will guide you through post-processing your painting. At the end of this lesson, you will have a finished piece, ready to be shown in your portfolio.

  • Over the Rainbow

Do a few color studies, unrelated to the final piece you're working on for the course. Let yourself experiment in various styles, like copying the old masters, creating art outdoors, or doing still life paintings. Upload your studies to the Learn Squared homework gallery.

  • Color Me Impressed

Take your grayscale image and add a few different color wash options. Try to keep the saturation under control so you can add points of focus later. Upload your options to the Learn Squared homework gallery.

  • Micro and Macro

This is the stage where you'll add the smallest details to your character. Think not only about what to add, but also what to remove. Sometimes certain details need to be blurred in order for others to pop.

  • Portfolio-Ready

Add the final post-processing to your portrait. Try to keep the lights and shadows from becoming overdone in this stage. Upload your finished painting to the Learn Squared homework gallery.
