Lesson 5 of 5 3D Character Art
Pose your character, then set up environments, lights and cameras to render out a series of high-quality keyframes.
Posing Homework
Pose your character in ZBrush, integrating one or two key props if needed. For this assignment, create only one pose. After you’ve done your full presentation in this lesson, you can come back to this homework and use what you’ve learned to inform the way you create more poses.
Beginner Path: Follow the pose Antonio created, or find reference and create a pose of your own.
Hybrid Designer: Choose a pose that fits your vision and feels right for the character’s personality.
3D Character Artist: For your first pose, it’s a good idea to start with the pose used in the original 2D concept art you’re following. You can branch out from there with future poses.
Basic Unreal Setup Homework
Import your character and maps into Unreal, set up basic lighting and create a simple scene. This homework is more about experimentation and getting familiar with the software and techniques, so don’t worry about setting up the final scene you’ll create for this lesson - that will come later. Have fun playing with the tools!
Master Material Homework
Using the techniques Antonio demonstrated in this chapter, create your master material. You can also add any custom texture to your character that you feel is necessary.
Presentation Homework
Build your final scene in Unreal, Marmoset or the software of your choosing. Set up the character, environment, lighting and camera, and render out the scene. After this, add any final touches needed in Photoshop.
Beginner Path: You can follow Antonio’s scene, but we recommend setting up a scene of your own.
Hybrid Designer: Showcase your character in the best possible way, avoiding things that obscure the design.
3D Character Artist: Set up a scene that embodies the original 2D character design artwork.
Once you’re finished with presentation, circle back to the beginning of this lesson to pose and present your character again, so that you can create multiple keyframes.
Aim to create 3 keyframes in total for the course. Make sure at least one of these frames shows the character’s full body clearly, and after that you can move into close-ups or more specific poses.
For extra credit, create 6 or more total keyframes. Since you’ve already done the more utilitarian poses by this point, you can use these extra frames to really experiment with extreme lighting, poses, framing and more. Use your imagination, and have fun!
