Lesson 3 of 5 3D Character Art
Set up a low-poly version of your sculpt, create UVs, and finally bake, using professional techniques.
Low Poly Mesh Homework
Create the low-poly version of your character. What you do here will vary depending on your goals with this course.
If you want to do complex things with your character later, like rigging and animation, or if you simply want to practice the true 3D character artist’s workflow, you should take extra care and do a full low-poly version of the character in Maya, 3ds Max, Blender or the software of your choice.
If your goal with the character is only to create a set of keyframe images or concept art, then you can get away with less involved low-poly modeling. You can use ZRemesher right inside ZBrush, and if there are any issues with the final render later you can correct those in the paintover stage.
UV Homework
Now it’s time to create the UVs for your character. When laying out your UVs, pay attention to things like scale, orientation and efficiency. If you don’t have access to the software Antonio showed, you can use free alternatives like Blender or UVLayout.
If you’re planning only to use your character for keyframe images or concept art, and don’t need ultra detailed UVs, you can use quicker solutions like auto UV tools. However, you’re still encouraged to try doing your own UVs, because it’s a useful skill for a 3D artist to know.
Baking Homework
As the final homework for this lesson, you will bake your high-poly sculpt to the low-poly version you created. You can use Substance Painter, Marmoset or whatever software you choose. Free alternatives include xNormal, Blender and many more.
